Gala evening
The Athénée Palace is a monument classified by the authorities for its architectural and historical value. Indeed, it was built in 1863 in a neoclassical style, thanks to the patronage of the banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard and his wife Anna Eynard-Lullin, to house the headquarters of the Geneva’s Arts Society.
Founded in 1776, this company which is still active today, aims at promoting and developing the arts, agronomy and economy in the Geneva’s canton. Created on the initiative of watchmaker Louis Faizan and geologist Horace-Benedict de Saussure who led one of the first scientific expeditions to the summit of Mont Blanc, it was the home of Geneva’s elite and counted among its presidents some great scientists like botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle or physicist Auguste de la Rive.
For our gala evening, we invite you to discover the rooms of the Palace and the works of art they contain. First of all, the Grand Salon, where was held in October 1863, shortly before the inauguration of the building, the first International Conference to relief war-wounded persons, which originated the international Red Cross Committee founded by Henri Dunant. Then, the famous Salle des abeilles, whose ceiling decorated with bees symbolizes the tireless and industrious activity of the Geneva’s Arts Society and whose painted frieze of twenty-six medallions immortalize the memory of illustrious Geneva’s citizens.
